To easily multiply by 11, the steps are...

  • Begin with the rightmost digit of the number you want to multiply by 11.
  • Write down this rightmost digit.
  • Move one position to the left and add the next digit from the original number. Write down this result next to the rightmost digit.
  • Continue this process, moving left one position at a time, adding the next digit from the original number to the result. Make sure you add any carry overs from previous step.
  • Repeat until you have processed all the digits in the original number.
  • Finally write down the leftmost digit. Make sure you add any carry overs from previous step.
  • The number of steps = (digits in multiplicand) + (digits in 11) − 1.
